Welcome to Hong Kong, Canadian Consul and Senior Trade Commissioner Mr Jason Reeve

Mr Jason Reeve

Consul and Senior Trade Commissioner Mr Jason Reeve has assumed his role in Hong Kong and Macau in September this year and is delighted to greet Wine & Spirits Magazine readers.

Serving to promote trade between Canadian and Hong Kong and Macau businesses, Mr Reeve is particularly proud of Canadian wines’ reputation. “Canada is the leading Icewine producer in the world, thanks to Inniskillin’s Vidal Icewine winning Vinexpo’s Le Grand Prix d’Honneur in 1991, bringing the world’s attention to Canadian wines,” He explains, “As of today, Canada has over 650 wineries and over 200 craft distilleries.”

Mr Reeve’s first event in Hong Kong was the Canadian Craft Whisky Trade Tasting, featuring ten craft whiskies made from different Canadian provinces. Various Hong Kong industry players, representing distributors, private clubs, and bar & restaurant groups, were invited to taste the whiskies and meet producers online.

Before relocating from Shanghai, Mr Reeve spared no effort in promoting Canadian wines. In 2021, he co-hosted a 3-month New World Carnival Wine Initiative with Grape & Co., China’s foremost wine education institute, showcasing Canadian wines from thirteen producers through various social networks, wine courses, wine contests and sommelier competitions.

Having lived in Beijing, Shanghai and Taiwan for many years, Mr Reeve also has many tips on pairing Canadian wine with Chinese food, “East China dishes taste sweet, going well with red wines with strong fruity flavours.  Spicy Sichuan cuisines are best served with some relief from semi-dry whites.  Regarding the relatively lighter-flavoured Cantonese cuisine, my first choice would be equally light-flavoured red wines such as Pinot Noir.”

So, please stay tuned with us. We will keep an open dialogue with Mr Reeve and update you on Canadian wines and spirits events!
